Classes

1st Period – 10:00-11:00

Archery – with Coach Dan McKeag

Ages: 11-15
Cost: $95 includes use of equipment every week
Students will have fun shooting at balloons, straw targets and a variety of other targets under the experienced supervision of Coach Dan in a safe environment. In this class students will learn the proper techniques and safety of Archery and will have a blast doing it! Some of the main areas that will be covered are:

  • Proper techniques of shooting a bow and arrow
  • Proper techniques of holding the bow
  • Care of the bow and arrow
  • Proper stance when shooting the bow
  • Safety techniques at the target

MAD SCIENCE with your favorite MAD Scientists!

Hands-on FUN science, All new Science sessions. This semester = Natural Wonders which includes sessions in Earth science, Walloping Weather, Exploring ecosystems, Earth awareness, Bugs, Amazing Animals, etc…. All sessions include fun hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations and take homes.


Ingram’s Karate 1 (30 min class) – with Sensei Shelby

Cost: $35, sibling discount $30
Ages- 3-5
Through out the semester students will learn Isshin-Ryu Karate Do. Not only will they be learning a traditional martial art, they will also be learning self-confidence and self- discipline.
In the younger class they will develop focus, better motor skills, and the basic building blocks to traditional martial arts, while having fun!


Ingram’s Karate 2 (30 min class) – with Sensei Shelby

Cost: $45, sibling discount $40
Ages- 6+
Through out the semester students will learn Isshin-Ryu Karate Do. Not only will they be learning a traditional martial art, they will also be learning self-confidence and self- discipline.
In the older class students will learn more techniques and self-defense. They will also learn the responsibilities of knowing when and to when not to use their karate. We want to mold well rounded martial artist in the dojo and out of the dojo.
Each student will get a chore list and will earn stripes/stickers they can add to their belt at the end of the semester. These are good motivational tools we use for the students to reward good behavior!


Quick Art (30 min. class) – with Arp and Trish Laszlo

Ages: 5-7 (4 with parent participation)

Quick, easy, and simple art fun. This class is designed for kids that are often on the move and prefer to do their art in short bursts before they run off and play. The emphasis of the class is on experimentation and fun. Projects and media will be varied, including: painting, clay, glueing with food, collage, chalk pastels, etc. Parents should expect to supervise their children once the 30 minutes of class is over. Plan to get messy and wear clothing that may become stained. Parents may need to assist children in washing themselves up after class is over.


Global Explorers Cooperative Class – coordinator Sandi Lefebvre

Ages: 7+
Cost: Free with parent participation
In this class, we will explore exciting places on our planet. Parents, if your child signs up for this class, you will be responsible for planning and teaching 2-3 classes during the semester. You may choose to teach about a specific country or a specific region. Your class can be geared around animals of that area, people, customs, foods, etc. We will have a large world map that can be used by all to identify the locations each week. Ideas for classes could involve crafts, food tasting, customs, games, a short video about that region, etc.  Pairs nicely with our Cooking Around the World Co-op class!


Kids Choir – with Cherylann Bellavia

Ages: 7-10

This class allows children to participate in a simple, basic choir enjoying various types of tasteful music ending with a performance for family and friends at the end of the class session (12 weeks later).


The Art of Magic  – with Magic Jay

Ages: 9+
Cost: $125 + $35 non-refundable material fee
In this class we will learn how to perform some amazing magic tricks. You learn how to present each trick properly and how to put different effects together to create a show. By the end of this class you will be on your way to becoming an amazing entertainer. No matter what path you choose. The skills learned will benefit you in many ways. Some skills and qualities are hand eye coordination, communication skills, patience and discipline.


Beginning Chess:  An Introduction to the Royal Game – with Coach Eric

Ages: 6+ (For children younger than 6 years contact Coach Eric)
Cost: $75
In this class, students are introduced to the history, rules and playing fundamentals for one of the world’s oldest strategic games, chess.  Chess traces  its  history back some 1500 years, to the Indian game of Chaturanga.  Classes will be composed of learning time followed by play.  After all, chess is a game meant to be enjoyed.


Writing Across Cultures – with Sarah Tierney

Ages: 7+
Cost: $50
We will explore traditional poetry styles from all over the world. Students will practice creative expression, increase vocabulary, while learning about the way our place and time contribute to the ways in which we express ourselves.

Art Explorations – with Arp and Trish Laszlo

Ages: 8+
Cost: $70 + $15 non-refundable material cost
A mixed art class designed for slightly older students who have longer attention spans. This class emphasizes experimentation and fun rather than product. While projects are presented by the teacher, the outcome is determined by the student. Student can choose to stick with the presented project, or experiment with the available media in the way they choose (within reason). There will be a wide variety of projects involving multiples types of media, including clay, tempera, cake tempera, markers, crayons, paper, chalk and oil pastels, watercolors, tissue paper and more. Some of the time we will be experimenting with styles of art inspired by famous artists. Plan to get messy and wear clothing that may become stained. Children are asked to help clean up in the last 10 minutes of class.


Guitar World 1 (Beginner) – with Chris Cappella

Ages: 2-6
Cost: $60 per student; 10% discount for 2 family members; 20% discount for 3 or more family members.
Important: The guitar teacher (that’s me) will bring one full-size acoustic guitar. Kids are not required to have guitars to attend, but might find it more hands-on to bring one. If so, a half-size (kids) guitar is recommended. They are anywhere from $25-45, available from Target, Walmart, and Amazon.
Does your preschooler enjoy music? Is she fascinated with guitar sounds and does he rock out whenever a guitar is played? Then this is their class! Little ones will be introduced to guitar, its many sounds and parts, and how to make music themselves. From holding a guitar pick to strumming the strings, this fun course will give your budding musician an appreciation for live music. The best part is – everyone gets to participate and play!


Minecraft Coding and Programming – with Bruce Bertan

Let’s take Minecraft to the next level. This session we will learn to control things in minecraft. We’ll write programs to control “turtles” to have them follow commands while we’re off doing other things. Our turtles will mine for us and craft for us, they’ll follow all of our commands.


Discover Music Kids Club – with Cherylann Bellavia

Ages: 4-6
Cost: $45
This fun class integrates singing, movement and fun reinforcement activities while introducing basic music concepts, basic music theory and exploration of different music topics such as rhythm and instruments. This class is non stop fun! Fun! FUN! Occasional music related videos are also used as well as music stories and crafts.


The Royal Game: Chess for Experienced Players – with Coach Eric Clemenson

Ages: 6+
Cost: $75
Chess is a great way to work the mind and is suitable for all ages. It is an open ended learning experience, there’s always room for improvement. Most importantly, it’s just plain FUN! Playing chess teaches patience, discipline, and responsibility for one’s decisions. It also brings increased confidence and integration of higher-order reasoning skills. Parents are encouraged to play their children (beating grown-ups is fun!). The advanced course will present tactical devices, checkmating patterns, elementary endgames and more. General Chemistry – with Sharon Nunley

This is an introductory class. We will be covering basic concepts. Everything from molecular bonding to the dissection of the periodic table.

Learn to play the guitar! From tuning to soloing, this course for beginners will have you jammin’ in no time. Learn major and minor chords, barre chords and strumming techniques. Playing individual strings, you’ll also learn major and minor scales, pentatonic scales, hammer-ons and slides. Then it’s on to playing songs, including introductions to rock, blues, and flamenco styles. To make it super easy, we’ll use chord diagrams (finger positions on the strings) and tablature (numbers on strings that correspond to frets) rather than having to read music. Handouts from each class with help you practice at home.


App Camp – with Bruce Bertan

Ages: 10+

Learn to program apps for Androids. This class introduces students to the basics of writing a program for an app that can run on Android phones. Android phones are not required. The program is developed on a computer (will be supplied) and then downloaded onto the phone.


Hip Hop Dance Class –  with Miranda Heitz

Ages: 8+
Cost: $85 per student- price reduced to reflect no class on 10/21
You will need: Clothes you can move in, water and sneakers
This class will have students learning all kinds of hip hop dance steps and dance routines in a fun creative environment. Miss Miranda has been teaching Hip Hop since the 90’s and has a way of teaching kids so that they feel comfortable and understand how to creatively express themselves. Dancers also learn about being positive, confidence, teamwork and physical fitness. Hope to see you there!

What in the World? Geography 101 – with Coach Eric

Ages: 6-16
Cost: $85 + $5 non-refundable material fee
This course introduces the student to “traditional” (physical) geography, the study of the surface of the Earth and the natural processes that shaped it, as well as human geography, how humans impact the Earth and how they are, in turn, affected by the Earth.
This course will include activities such as map making and board games.


Preschool YogaKids – with Ms. Susan

Ages: 3-5
Cost: $84
Preschool YogaKids is a fun combination of music, stories, yoga poses, games, guided relaxation and art that teaches the whole child. Lessons are built around an age appropriate theme, such as how our bodies work, nature, or fun activities like going to the beach, or zoo. Children learn to connect to their bodies, to each other, and to the world around them. Parents are welcome to participate, or observe.


Balloon Art Twisting  – with Magic Jay

Ages: 7+
Cost: $115 + $20 non-refundable material fee
In this class you will learn how to make cool balloon animals out of twisty balloons. You learn how to use a pump to blow up the balloons, how to twist them into animals, hats, swords and much more. By the end of this class you will know how to twist many different shapes. The art of balloon twisting helps greatly with hand eye coordination, patience and discipline.


Paper Crafting – with Sarah Tierney

Ages: 11-14
Cost: $50 + 25 non-refundable material fee
Paper and cardboard can be used to make so many things! From origami to paper mache, we will explore how to use paper to create three dimensional art. Some of the planned projects will include Mobiles, Pumpkins, Masks and many more.


Music with Mar. – with Miss Karen

Ages: 0-5
Cost: $90/family (not per child)
Music with Mar. is a company dedicated to bringing quality, brain based music to children, families and teachers. The philosophy is to use music to teach, getting children ready for skills they need for a successful, happy life. Miss Karen will lead this class using various props using music and movement to teach the whole child. Caregiver participation is required.

Children’s Clay Sculpture Homeschool – with Jacqueline LaDrig

Note: this class will be held at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center Studio D.  This is located directly next to the Dunedin Community Center
Hand building clay class with strong emphasis on activities that develop imagination and inventiveness. Children develop manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination through slab, carving and coiling methods. For new and continuing students, ages 6 & up.

Engineering with Lego – with Bruce Bertan

Let’s build STEM skills by building motorized machines that use pulleys, gears, levers and wheels. Students work in teams to build each part of their machine, then combine the parts to have a working, motorized machine. We’ll build cars, bugs that walk, a dog that wags his tail, and more!


Woodcarving and Wood Burning – with Bob Marek

Ages: 9+
Cost: $84
Note: This is a two hour class
Instruction in woodcarving includes shallow and deep relief, caricature and realistic. Instruction in wood burning includes the art of using a hot tool to draw on wood.


School Age YogaKids – with Ms. Susan

Ages: 6+
Cost: $84
Children will enjoy moving, breathing, and relaxing in this class designed for 6years and up. Through music, stories, and yoga poses, students will learn tools to focus and self regulate, all while having fun!


Mastering Sudoku– with Coach Eric Clemenson

Ages: All ages
Cost: $75
Your brain is like a muscle, it gets stronger with regular exercise. All mental challenges provide valuable exercise for the brain, but Sudoku forms a particularly good “daily workout”. This course will teach basic techniques as well as advanced techniques like X-wings, jellyfish etc., guiding the student from beginner to Sudoku mastery.


Life Science – with Sharon Nunley

Ages: 8-12
Cost: $120
Introduction to living and ecosystem system. Also covering the taxonomy of the living systems.

Teen Clay: Wheel & Handbuilding Homeschool – with Jacqueline LaDrig

Ages: 13+
Cost: $130 + $10 non-refundable material fee
Note: this class will be held at the Dunedin Fine Arts Center Studio D.  This is located directly next to the Dunedin Community Center
Students will learn basic wheel throwing techniques and how to set up, operate and then clean their wheels. They will also focus on hand-building with strong emphasis on activities that develop imagination and inventiveness.  Slab, pinch, carving and coil methods will be explored. For new and continuing students.


The Melting Pot I – Co-op Class – class coordinator Sandi Lefebvre

Ages: 5+ (5 and 6 year olds need parent help during each class)
Cost: Free with parent participation
This is the class where anything can happen! Parents, you will be responsible for planning and teaching one class per child you have in the class.   If you have 3 children in the class, you will teach 3 classes.  You can do just about anything! How about a woodworking project? What about a cool crafting project? Does your child love animals? Have an animal rescue group come and visit. How about some exciting experiments for the day? Or a cooking project. The sky is just about the limit (ok, no skydiving) for this class.


The Melting Pot II – Co-op Class

Ages: 5+ (5 and 6 year olds need parent help during each class)
Cost: Free with parent participation
Melting Pot II is a duplicate class to Melting Pot (see full description above). This second class has been created in response to demand.   Parents will be responsible for planning and teaching one class per child they have enrolled in the class.  Parents in both classes will be able to sign-up to teach for week(s) that  work with their schedule.

Guitar World 3 – Advanced Guitar World – with Chris Cappella

This class is a continuation from the previous semester and is currently full.
Ages: 10+ (Adults, too!)
Cost: $120 per student; 10% discount for 2 family members; 20% discount for 3 or more family members.
Required: Bring your own guitar (acoustic preferred)
Important: This guitar course is designed for those with a fundamental understanding of guitar who have learned the major and minor chords as well as barre chords and strumming techniques. It is aimed at students who have satisfactorily completed the Beginner guitar course at HOP.
Now that you’re familiar with a guitar and can play chords and even notes, where do you go from here? The next steps are easy, but important to mastering the guitar. In this advanced guitar course, learn techniques to play better, faster, and cleaner than ever before. Finger exercises will improve hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and speed. An emphasis on scales will turn the exercises into music in no time, even affording attendees the opportunity to solo and improvise. Ear-training will be introduced, and tablature will be a signature feature in learning songs. Handouts from each class with help you practice at home.


P.E. is for Everyone – with Andy Polce

Come enjoy the great Florida outdoors with several of your favorite games and sports. The emphasis will be on fun and as much or as little instruction as the child wishes. During the semester, games will include: kickball, golf, soccer, disc golf, touch football, and other fun playground games.


Hands on Science – with Sharon Nunley

Ages: 7-10
Cost: $120 + $20 non-refundable material fee
The first class will be used to discuss and understand the science behind the following weeks experiment. There will be six experiments in all.


Cooking Around the World Co-op Class –  coordinator Kim Polce

Ages: 7+ (younger with parent participation)
Cost: Free with parent participation
This is the class where we take the students all around the world.  We introduce them to a new country each week!  Parents if your child signs up for this class, you will be responsible for planning and teaching 2-3 classes for the semester – this number depends on the number of students signed up.  The classes should have a brief, written fun facts sheet about the country you will be presenting for the students to take home. And, of course, some yummy foods that best represents the country.


Beginning Violin – with Ally Rhoades

Ages: 3+ (incl. Adults)
Cost: $100 + $10 non-refundable material fee
Please note: Students will need to bring their own violin
This will be an introduction to the violin: how to hold it, how to play, how each string works … We will also begin to learn how to read music (if you do not already know how!) We can also learn how to play easy tunes – popular music, classical music, Broadway songs .. whatever you want!


Introduction to Ballet & Jazz – with Barbara Marangon

Ages: 4-6
Cost: $110.00
Class Duration: 45 minute
Please note:  Fee has been reduced by $15 because there will not be class on November 18, 2015
This is an introduction to ballet and Jazz dance for ages 4-6. Jazz floor exercises, ballet barre basics, turns, jumps, and free dance are presented to the students.


SAT PREP – with Dan Roeder

Ages: All ages
Cost: $75
This course is designed to help any student preparing to take the SAT to improve their score. All sections of the test are covered: Critical Reading, Math and Writing-including the essay. During this course, students will complete a minimum of 4 SAT practice tests. Test problems will be reviewed in class. Students will also have weekly homework and regular quizzes designed to help them master the latest various SAT test taking strategies and techniques.
