Diversity and Kindness in Current Events (Trisha Laszlo)

Ages: 13-99
Cost: $77
Paypal email: arphaus@gmail.com
In this course, we will grapple with issues of civil rights, human rights, justice, and equality as they play out in U.S. news today, including such topics as immigration, gender equality, mass incarceration, health care, racism, disability issues, and LGBTQ issues. Whenever possible we will read, watch, or interview people who are directly affected by the issues. When we don’t know or understand something, we will research the topic together and pool information.
Students will be challenged to keep an open mind and consider issues from both their own perspectives and experiences, and from the perspectives of others. While this is very much a discussion class, our guiding question will be this: “How can we use listening and kindness to make the world a better place for all?”
Some portions of the class will be teacher-led, with information given to understand historical context. Other portions of the class will be student driven, with students asking questions, suggesting topics, and problem-solving in a group. There will be some homework each week, such as watching assigned videos, reading an article or researching an issue that the class is working on. Since some videos may be too long to watch in class, students must agree to do the homework and watch them at home so that we are all on the same page during class.
Important: Because this class will tackle topics that can often be emotional, controversial, and/or contentious, parents are encouraged to actively talk to students about class activities. Parents may want to watch/read assigned homework along with students, especially if the topic is likely to be difficult/emotional. For safety, we will create a code of class conduct that will support all students being respected.

Each class begins with the children guessing what’s in the “Mystery Nature Box”. They are told to always begin with, “Is it alive?”. Sometimes it is – maybe a tarantula or a plant seed. Sometimes it is not – perhaps a fossil or crystal. Thus begins our scientific journey of the natural world.

  • No-Bones (aka invertebrates) – worms and compost, Medicinal Leeches (we will not have any “blood-letting”); native millipedes and giant Vietnamese Centipedes; Trap-door spiders and its Arachnid relatives – the tarantula, giant scorpion and African Vinergaroon; and last, but certainly not least- the insects, including antlions, grubs, Bess Beetles, and giant Hissing Roaches.
  • For vertebrate comparisons, the children will meet a 14 foot-long Burmese Python, American Alligator, African Hedgehogs and many more “boney” critters.
  • October is “Creature of the Night” month. I will introduce the children to bats and owls.

Science Fair (Shar Nunley)

Ages: 8-80
Cost: $46 + $10 materials fee
Paypal: paypal.me/SharonNunley
Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in a Science Fair. It’s almost a rite of passage. I will use the site ScienceBuddies.org for the kids to pick a science fair project to do. This site has over 1,500 experiments with levels from Beginner to Advanced. It gives a step by step break down on how to do every experiment. I have put together a 12 week plan where I work with the kids in a study group atmosphere. This means the first 2 or 3 class will be me explaining how to do a project and helping them pick on that is age and educational level appropriate. My goal here is for every student to do the bulk of the work as a home project. They will have science folders (I will provide) that will have logs and instructions. All the kids have to do is complete their tasks on a weekly basis. Not every project will take 12 weeks there is a cushion built in for unschoolers to have freedom and larger projects for the more academic learner. On thse last day of HOP, we will display the projects for everyone to see. Or we can do a night time get together so friends and family come. The Dunedin Library is willing to host a night display.

Sweets & Treats Cooperative Class (Coordinator – Jamie Fisher)

If you have 3 children sign up for the class, you will teach 3 times!
So what can you do in your class? You can do a baking project, do cake or cupcake decorating, do cookie decorating, make candy, create crazy contraptions with candy, do science experiments with candy, and so much more! There will be a Pinterest board with lots of ideas. You can add to the board, choose an activity from there, or just choose your own. There will be a list for sign-ups for everyone in the class. That way, we will be sure not to duplicate class ideas.
