Thinking about attending the Homeschooler’s of Pinellas (HOP) Meet and Greet? Here’s a little more information to help you understand how it works and why it is a benefit for families to attend.
Meet and Greet takes place before registration, which gives families the chance to meet teachers and discuss the content of classes fully before registration. Registration typically begins three days after the Meet and Greet (check the Calendar to view exact dates).
Things to consider before attending the Meet and Greet
Classes at HOP are meant to serve the purpose of enriching the educational lives of students and family. Our classes should not be considered to be a complete homeschool curriculum.
When choosing classes, parents should be aware that classes may vary in style. While all teachers must adhere to our written classroom policies, teachers will vary in teaching style, teaching processes, and goals. Some classes are more goal-oriented, with clear learning goals. Other classes are more flexible, creative and/or open-ended.
Attending the Meet and Greet is the perfect opportunity to talk to teachers and find a good fit for your child before you commit to registering for a class. We expect parents to carefully read class descriptions and discuss the substance of classes with teachers at the Meet and Greet before registering.
What happens at the Meet and Greet?
Parents and students can talk to teachers, ask questions about classes, and generally get a feel for what each class will be like. We want families, and especially the students, to feel comfortable and excited about taking classes. The Meet and Greet allows children to meet teachers face-to-face as they consider which classes to take. Parents can also ask teachers more thorough questions about the content of classes and what a typical class might look like.
Teachers will have tables set up for each class. Some teachers will have fun activities at their table so that students can experience a little bit of what each class will be like. During past Meet and Greets, we have seen teachers set up all kinds of fun projects to give families a taste of the fun in store for them…photo booths, art projects, athletic activities, examples of art, magic tricks, balloon twisting, etc. There is usually a lot to do at the Meet and Greet. Each Meet and Greet is different, though, as our classes and teachers change each semester. Who knows what our wonderful teachers will have in store for us at this semester’s Meet and Greet? Our families can’t wait to find out!
Kids can have fun in the gym and on the public playground outside, meeting old friends and making some new ones. One important part of our co-op is that it allows both children and adults in our community to socialize and make friends. We’ve been away from each other for a few weeks now, since the end of the Fall 2015 semester, so many of us are more than ready to get back in touch with good friends. For families that are new to HOP, the Meet and Greet gives children the opportunity to start making connections with other people. The fenced playground, which is just outside the doors to the gymnasium, makes it easy for kids to play and casually meet potential new friends.
Families that are new to HOP can meet our Planning Team and get a feel for what the HOP community is all about. New members can experience firsthand the sense of welcoming, of excitement for learning, and of friendship, that our HOP community manages to show semester after semester.
We will offer regular tours of the facility so that new families can get a feel for the space and students can begin to feel comfortable in our facility. New co-ops can feel big or overwhelming to students at first. Taking a tour of the facility before classes begin enables students to get a feel for the space so that the first day of the new semester is much more manageable. Families new to HOP will get the chance to see all our varied classroom spaces, along with the outdoor spaces at Dunedin Community Center.
Whether you are a longtime member of HOP or are new to our co-op, we look forward to seeing you at the Meet and Greet!
