ACTING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING TECHNIQUES (Andromeda Edison)

Ages: 11+

Fee: $85 plus $10 non-refundable materials fee

Email: andromeda.edison@gmail.com

Learning some basic acting techniques and practicing them, helps with not just stage or screen acting but everyday activities in front of any size group of people.

We will cover some basics of how to stand in front of a group, body language, how to be heard, drills on projecting. We are also going to work on expressing emotions including the importance of being able to change emotional expression quickly or slowly. We will do breathing exercises and even learn a little about miming and more.

I will also introduce everyone to some basic stage terminology for fun.

Each learner will pick a monologue to perform for the group (they can choose if they want to perform them in the talent show at the end of the semester or not). If there is any group of learners who want to do a scene together we can also do this.

Minimally every learner will be expected to practice and perform their monologue the last class of the semester for the group (parents can come watch).

I have many years of experience performing and directing on stage as a theatre arts major in college with a specialty in Shakespeare. I have been a regular speaker at conferences and on large stages in the area of Human Rights education and study of the US Constitution for the past 13+ years.

You and fellow classmates will start with a bank account with some money.

We will find the answers to each of the following:

How do I find a job? (And GET the job.)

Will I Pursue Higher education? Vocational school?

How do I find a place to live?

What do I do with my paycheck?

What’s a budget and how do I use one?

How do I pay the bills? (What bills do I have?)

How do I pay taxes?

Social security? (What is social security?)

Should I have a savings account? Why?

How much should I budget to spend with friends?

How do I know if I spent too much money for the month?

And many more questions.

Along the way we will encounter problems we need to solve.

You will learn several hacks so you can solve the problems yourself (making you more independent).

There needs to be a minimum of 6 people attending this class to make it happen.

Each person will need to bring a spiral notebook, a folder for papers and pen/pencil.

(The notebook can have folders inside. This is preferred so as to keep everything together.)

You also need to bring some sort of calculator.

Each week we will have some sort of food/snack in class. This will be decided by the class and each week a different student will be responsible for bringing it in.

HOW TO ARGUE (AND DEBATE)  (Andromeda Edison)

Ages: 13+

Fee: $90

Email: andromeda.edison@gmail.com

Debates are a great way to gain knowledge, develop critical thinking, and improve communication skills, among other things. We will learn how to behave during a formal debate, but also a real life discussion with another person when you have different views than the other person.

Occasionally, we will do in class fun spontaneous debates. We will pick a question at random and then each learner will pick a side at random, prepare their arguments in 5-10 minutes and then present their arguments in 5-10 minutes.

Sample questions:

* Do men gossip more than women?

* Would you rather be poor and honest or rich and dishonest?

* Would you rather travel 100 years forward or back in time?

* Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

* Is it better to be TikTok famous or Instagram famous?

* Are hotdogs sandwiches?

* Are square pizza slices better than triangles?

* Are introverts too quiet, or are extroverts too loud?

* If Harry Potter magic existed, would it be ethical to use it?

We will also pick some more serious subjects and the learners will have time to prepare for them in-between classes.

I have 13+ years experience educating on two very similar documents, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written by the United Nations in 1948 and the United States Constitution. I received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2018 in Washington D.C. for my work in these areas. I work with middle and high school students to discuss every day issues and the more serious subjects as well.

Note: If there is a subject you feel strongly about us avoiding please let me know.

INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH (Jessica Oker)

Ages: 11 and up

Fee: $85 plus $15 non-refundable materials

Email: jessicaoker@gmail.com

At the age of 14, I became an exchange student. I traveled to France and enrolled in 9th grade knowing only two words that I learned on the plane. Maison and Chat – House and Cat. Within 4 months, I had to show my passport to prove that I was an American and not French. Immersion, combined with youth make for a potent combination when studying language. In my opinion, wrote instruction is limited and individuals need to learn a second language as they learn their first – through conversation and experiences.

This class will be taught mostly in French with English translation. It will be conversational and interactive. We will learn vocabulary and pronunciation of the alphabet because frankly any English word pronounced with a snazzy French accent usually hits the mark. Grammar will be experienced and not taught.

We will explore French culture, history, pop culture, art and music while snacking on croissants, quiche, bread and cheese and dessert crepes.

LEARN TO DRAW WITH CHARCOALS (Angel C Mercado)

Ages: 9-14

Fee: $100

Email: angelcollito1959@gmail.com

This class is designed to introduce the use of charcoal and eraser as drawing mediums. Throughout the semester students will be introduced to different concepts involved in drawing. From how to hold the charcoal to how to make lines, shapes and values, to create the illusion of 3D sketches. Also, students will learn about how to observe in order to sketch more accurate.

Students will learn and start to develop muscle memory, essential for drawing. At the beginning of every class we will dedicate about 5 minutes of exercises to develop our muscle memory. At times some of these exercises will be used to help develop our creativity and draw with the flow of the moment.

Example of an average class:

It will always start with warm up exercises.

Reasons: to loosen up, get more focus on the present moment and develop muscle memory.

Day’s topic: Tubes, boxes and triangles = the human body

Students will be introduced to how to simplify the human body into simple shapes. The idea is for them to learn to draw a figure from many angles, instead of being restricted to just copying an image and not learn much about the process.

Also they will be introduced to perspective, the importance of edges, composition, how to draw the human figure.

I do my best to try to keep student’s attention and engage on each project by not spending too much time in one subject, but instead revisiting each concept with new sketches.

List of materials

Newsprint or charcoal drawing pad. At least 11”x14”. If you can not find it, any drawing paper will work. No reason to spend money on expensive paper.

A stiff board to support the paper.

Vine charcoals soft, medium and hard. Medium is what we will use the most.

Charcoal pencils. I prefer the paper peel charcoal pencils, no need for sharpeners!

Kneaded eraser

Most of these items can be found locally at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Also at Dick Blick in Tampa.
