Age ranges are not all set in stone, so talk to a teacher if you think a particular class is a good fit!

Acrylic Painting 101 for Kids & Adults (Magic Jay)

Ages: 8-99
Cost: $115 + $15 materials fee; $10 sibling discount
Acrylic painting is a great way to express oneself and is a perfect medium to start with. In this class students will learn how to hold and use various styles of brushes, how to mix colors to achieve different colors. We will paint sunsets, trees, galaxies and more. After this course students will be on their way to creating works of art at home with ease.

 

Alternative Energy (Sharon Nunley)

Ages: 10-100
Cost: $50 + $35 materials fee
Investigation into alternative forms of energy. First we will start with current forms and how they are processed. Then investigate the environments risks they pose thru lab experiments. Including why they use the methods for clean up they do. How hybrids cars work and if they really are the answer to the oil problem. The format for this class will alternate with lecture and lab experiments. Then turn our focus to the alternatives. Are they sustainable? Are they economical? How do we make the change?

Archery for Kidz (Coach Dan McKeag)

Cost: $95
Learn a new sport and have loads of fun in a relaxed atmosphere. The young people will achieve fundamentals of shooting a bow, learning proper safety procedures and having a blast as they progress in the class. This is a hands-on class and all the equipment is provided. This is a class for a novice or a veteran as we shoot at targets balloons and even some stuffed animals,
Discipline and Patience in Archery equals Fun! Fun! Fun!

Art Exploration (Sara Norine James)

Ages: 5-10

In this creative and playful art class, students will get their hands into a variety of materials. We will emphasis exploration and process over product as we work with paint, glue, fiber, paper, wood, clay, found objects, and other materials.
Note: one week in March may be canceled.

Balloon Art 101 (Magic Jay)

Ages: 6-99
Cost: $100 + $15 materials fee; $10 sibling discount
In this class students will learn how to use twisty balloons to make all sorts of animals such as dogs, cats, monkeys, trees and much more. This type of hands on artwork will allow the students hand eye coordination to develop drastically over the 12 week period. This form of art is fun and can be used in the future at parties or even as an income source.

Ballroom Basics 1-2-3 (Fritzi Frederick)

Ages: 8-adult
Cost: $110; $10 sibling discount
Ballroom Basics 1-2-3 is a rare opportunity to learn and master the skills of a dozen different partner dances. Each week will be a pair of dances (ie, Waltz and Rumba, Tango and ChaCha, etc) be introduced and taught. These 12 different dances will be repeated in the second six weeks , reviewing and progressing forward. This is also a great way of learning social skills and communication through dance. Students will be paired up according to skill levels.

Billiards 101 – Learn how to play pool! (Magic Jay)

Ages: 8-99
Cost: $75; $10 sibling discount
In this billiards class students will learn how to play the game of pool! Students will learn hands on how to hold the pool cue (Stick) how to position their hands and all the rules related to a basic game of pool. By the end of the course students will be able to play a full game while following the rules. This game of strategy & patience is really fun and helps develop hand eye coordination.

Building and Engineering (Renee Bloom McGrady)

Ages: 8-15
Cost: $120
Through stages, we will explore the basics of building and engineering. Some activities include: building mini wooden vehicles, learning with snap circuits, and building a robot. Students will work off the skills learned to build and program Meccano robots to challenge other fellow students. There will be many take home projects however, Meccano is the final project and is NOT a take home item.

Cartooning and Sequential Art (Miguel Pimentel)

Ages: 9-99
Cost: $90
We will dive into character design (the importance of silhouettes), putting together an action sequence and telling a good story. Along the way, we will learn about panel use and many other terms. It is important that students be willing to do work from home. We will start with character design and what makes a character interesting, eventually we will be completing our own comics. This class uses a friendly peer review and critique system to help us all improve. Students will be supplied with a kit containing everything that they may need for this course.

Comparative Anatomy  (Sharon Nunley)

One week will be a lecture about the animal we will dissect the following week.
Lectures will be based on: the functionality of organs as compared to humans and other animals. The evolution of some organs and what is a vestigial organ. Topics related on evolution will be covered.

Crafting with Fabric (Stacy Tapscott)

Ages: 5+
Cost: $30 + $30 materials fee
This class is for fabric crafting with minimal sewing, projects examples are sock animals, emoji pillows, no sew blankets and pillows repurposing old clothes into new things etc. we will be using different types of tools like hot glue guns, iron on fabric stabilizers, scissors, glue etc. This class will be lots of fun. Materials will be provided.

Culinary Cooperative (Brandy Van Vossen)

Learn to make some quick, easy, and delicious creations in our cooperative cooking class! Each family is required to teach one class per child signed up.
If your child has an allergy, please let me know after you register so I can let the class know. 

Elementary Art Studio (Brandy Van Vossen)

Ages: 6+
Cost: $60 + $25 materials fee
Let’s explore modern artists and art movements from around the world! Students will learn about famous (and not-so-famous) artists and the techniques they use to create their masterpieces. Then we’ll create masterpieces of our own to take home each week. We’ll paint, sketch, and collage self-portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Students are expected to help clean up in the last 5-10 minutes of class.

Elementary Science (Renee Bloom McGrady)

Have fun exploring science through weekly activities. We will study life cycles, rock cycles, weather, light, motion, and so much more! Take home projects every week.

Everything Science Cooperative Class (Martha Bunge)

Ages: 5-10
Cost: $5
This is a fun cooperative class where science is the theme! Parents will be responsible for planning, purchasing materials (if needed), and teaching 1-2 classes for up to 12 kids during the semester.
Classes can be based on anything science related that will interest the kids in the group. Some ideas include: animal biology, anatomy, astronomy, chemistry, the sky is the limit with science.
Parents can also choose to co-teach on their weeks. Looking for ideas? Pinterest and Youtube is a great resource for ideas.

Explore Genetics (Sharon Nunley)

Ages: 12-100
Cost: $75 + $35 materials fee
Understand the make up that is Genetics/DNA. This class will have the format of lecture one week and experiment the next. We will:

  • Do a DNA investigation via the students own saliva.
  • Breed fruit flies to see how the specific result of dominant and recessive genes work.
  • Learn how to prepare microscope slides and use a new LCD screen microscope. It can be linked to a laptop and send picture to the laptop for study outside of the class. I will have a laptop that can email pics no need for student to have one.
  • Explore how the Human Genome Project has impacted society
  • Discuss the implications of genetic enhancements or genetic manipulation before birth can impact a population.

Geography 103: Europe & Africa (Eric Clemenson)

Ages: 8-14
Cost: $90 + $25 materials fee
This course covers the countries of Europe and Africa.
This course will be sequentially alternated with Geography 101: The USA, Geography 102: The Western Hemisphere, and Geography 104: Asia and Oceania. During these courses the student will be introduced to “traditional” (physical) geography, the study of the surface of the Earth and the natural processes that have shaped it, as well as human geography. These courses may include activities such as map making, map labeling, trivia games, and videos as well as a generous amount of history. This course also includes a selection of foods from the countries and cultures studied.

Graphic Design (Miguel Pimentel)

Required: Students must have a laptop
We live in a visual world. Graphic design is all around us! Understanding how that content is created allows us to create our own content instead of just consuming what other people make. In this course, we will work together to complete challenges designed to give us a familiarity with vector, raster and (if we have time) 3d rendering. Students will download Inkscape, GIMP and Sketchup. We will make cartoon versions of ourselves from a photo, perform basic touch ups, create a 3d scene, Make logos, Design T-shirts and posters. Come create beautiful things with us!

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Sandi Lefebvre)

**This class is primarily for returning Hogwarts students. There may be a few open spots for new students.**
Welcome returning students to your 2nd Year! We’ll have a new year of magic and fun at Hogwarts! We again will start our “year” in Diagon Alley where we will buy and make supplies we’ll need, such as wands (for those who have lost theirs), brooms and more. At Hogwarts, students will attend classes in Potions, Herbology, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, and Astronomy. We will learn to plant and care for Mandrakes, make “Howlers” learn the “lumos” Charm, make swelling solutions, deal with Cornish Pixies, make new house shirts, and more! As extra fun, we’ll have a day of Quidditch a visit from Dobby and taste some yummy foods. But beware, the Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Students will need to work together throughout the semester to discover clues and solve the mystery before the Basilisk claims it’s victims.
* Parents may choose, if they wish, to help prepare materials for one class for a $15 fee reduction.

Welcome, First Year Students, to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry!
We will start our adventures in Diagon Alley where students will get their wizard money and make some of their necessary school supplies. These acitivites will last for the first several classes and include wand making, feather pen contruction and a visit to Eelops Owl Emporium. Once we arrive at Hogwarts, students will be sorted into houses and will take various subjects such as Charms, Potions, History of Magic, Herbology, and Transfiguration. We will make house shirts, plant Devil’s Snare, learn to levitate objects using the Wingardium Leviosa spell, make a forgetfulness potion, and more! Our year wouldn’t be complete without a game of Quidditch, a Halloween Feast, and a relay race to find the Sorcerer’s Stone. Items made in class will be taken home by students to their muggle world.

Hip Hop dance (Miranda Heitz)

This class will have students learning all kinds of Hip Hop dance steps and dance routines in a fun creative environment. Miss Miranda has been teaching Hip Hop since the 90’s and has a way of teaching kids so that they feel comfortable and understand how to creatively express themselves. Dancers also learn about being positive, gaining confidence, building teamwork, and their physical fitness and health! Hope to see you there!

Improv & Drama Games (Arp Laszlo)

This class is all about having fun while learning improvisational comedy, where everything is made up on the spot! We’re going to do this by playing improv & theatre games while engaging in ridiculous amounts of laughter. On the way, we’re going to become better communicators, faster thinkers and grow into a team – all while celebrating our mistakes and conquering our fears. We’ll accomplish this in a safe, stress-free and supportive environment where we will make mistakes free of judgement and with the complete support of the team.
Skills we will work on: listening; agreement; association; object work; teamwork.
This class is for anyone who enjoys comedy, being silly and laughing. The skills we develop will be applicable to acting and daily life.

Interactive Board Games (Kim Polce)

Do you enjoy fun, strategic style games? If so, this class is for you! We will be playing group games such as Werewolf, Coup, Avalon and more. We will also have a class or two of “”speed gaming”” where we break-off into teams of 2-4 players and play a short 15-min game and then rotate to the next game.
A syllabus will be provided prior to our first class that will list the games we will be playing each week. Students are required to have a good understanding of each game before class. This will ensure that we have the entire time to play! Youtube is a great source for learning these games.
While this class will focus on fun, the student should be interested in and familiar with games with a strategic focus.

Inventions – An Art and Maker Space Workshop (Kathleen Casper)

Ages: 7+ (or younger with parent participation or teacher permission)

Do you enjoy hands-on art activities? Do you like inventing things?
Create your own artistic designs and inventions and participate in occasional building challenges (the tallest tower, the strongest bridge, etc.) This class is a maker-space with opportunities for creative arts and crafts (mosaics, multi-media art projects, free choice options,) as well as science/math/engineering projects (structural engineering, molecule model making, maze creating,) and other types of inventive skills. Ideas for weekly project themes will be presented but participants are free (& encouraged) to design their own projects with the materials provided (or those you bring in yourself if you want to add to the stash!)
Note: This class will meet 11 times.

Jr. Lego (Renee Bloom McGrady)

Ages: 5-10
Cost: $65
LEGO® Classic helps you to develop children’s creative skills and imagination. Work in teams or choose to free build. We will build cars, bridges, and play with different models. Chose simple play or intricate deluxe designs each week while enjoying a Lego craft. Students bring home a Lego creation and character by the end of the semester!

K’nex (Renee Bloom McGrady)

K’NEX Education is designed to introduce scientific concepts with building instructions that are aligned with STEAM. Come build vehicles, models, motorized creations, and bring creatures to life! Everyone will bring a creation home by the end of the semester.

 

Mad Science: NASA – Future Academy of Space Explorers (Lisa Kananen, Jeff Meister)

NASA’s plans are to have human explorers on Mars by the year 2035. That puts our students at the perfect age to lead this new exciting phase of SPACE exploration either walking on mars or helping to build the rockets to get there.
Mad Science brings you the excitement and wonder of space in this program, featuring exciting activities co-developed with NASA. Students will be taken on a voyage of space discovery through hands-on activities, amazing demonstrations and take home experiments each session. Explore the sun, moon, stars and planets; including earths own atmosphere and other space phenomena. Learn what its like to travel and live in space and work with the technology that has been developed for space exploration and investigate the forces of flight. By presenting an experience that is truly out of this world we hope to inspire future space scientists on missions to Mars and beyond…

Magic Tree House ~ Books 13-24 (Renee Bloom Mcgrady)

Martial Arts & Self Defense (Sherill Denison)

BE BULLY PROOF! Participants will learn the basics of American Taekwondo and a variety of self defense techniques from all styles of martial arts. Learn how to recognize and handle threatening situations to avoid being a victim. Improve confidence and self awareness. Increase balance and flexibility. Combine fun, focus, and fitness. Parents are encouraged to participate. Instead of waiting for your child during class, join in and participate!! Your child will feel more confident and learn more if you participate, and you will be able to help them practice at home.
Taught by a 2nd degree black belt instructor in an inclusive and encouraging environment.
Note: Not available to teach during Pinellas county Spring Break, March 13-18, but have reduced the class price to compensate for absence. 

Melting Pot Cooperative Ages 4-8 (Coordinator Martha Bunge)

Messy Fun for the Littles Cooperative Class (Coordinator – Stacy Tapscott)

Ages: 2-5
Cost: $5; The week’s assigned teacher agrees to provide, pay for, and bring the materials for the class that they are scheduled to teach
This is an active, fun, and messy cooperative class for our littlest members. The goal is to provide open-ended, hands-on, experiential, age-appropriate fun for our youngest members. Whatever we choose to bring, the kids should have freedom to explore, make decisions and help to determine how the class progresses.. Clothes will most likely get messy and/or stained. Classes do not have to feel like a “class”. Activities can be totally relaxed and exploratory. There is no forced expectation that children will come home with any particular product or having learned anything in particular except what they have chosen to take from their exploration. (Some examples: Fun with clay, Mud and mud-pies, tactile experiences with water pearls.) [Important: If your child is still in the stage where they put everything in their mouth, they should be monitored closely by a parent at all times. Some projects may involve things that are best not placed in mouths.]
Note: This is a cooperative class. Parents of students are expected to stay with their child at all times and help the week’s teacher to set up/clean up when they are able (around supervising their own child). Parents of students are expected to “teach” 1-2 classes over the course of the semester. The week’s assigned teacher agrees to provide, pay for, and bring the materials for the class that they are scheduled to teach. Parents can cooperate to co-teach classes if they like. Contact the coordinator for class ideas if you need to.

Mommy/Daddy and me Yoga class (3-6) (Karine Lespinasse Sabourault)

Join Miss Karine from Kidding Around Yoga for a fun filled, playful, and relaxing class for both you and your child(ren)!
Lessons are built around an age appropriate theme, such as how our bodies work, going on a boat, or to the zoo. Children learn to connect to their bodies, to each other, and to the world around them. In this interactive yoga class, we incorporate lots of yoga poses, enjoy partner poses with our child(ren), and move along to a wonderful Kidding Around Yoga song before ending with a calming and peaceful “snuggle time” guided relaxation activity.
For children ages 3 to 6 with their Mom/Dad. Elder sibling(s) can join in if they are willing to participate and meditate along! Infants welcome too.
Parent participation is required.
Please bring a yoga mat if you have one. Or buy one along with some of our favourite props, utilized throughout the semester, for an extra $15.

Music Together – Mixed Family Music Class (Karine Lespinasse Sabourault)

Cost: $90 + $45 per family materials fee; $55 sibling discount, siblings under 7 months free
If you a returning Family HOP class, you will find all new songs, CD and collection of activities to keep you and your child engaged! We look forward to bringing you the Spring “Maracas” Collection. If you are new to this class, this will be a wonderful family music class, filled with singing, instrument play, and lots of music to move to! The Music Together program allows your child to learn in a playful environment that is musically rich and always supportive of their learning style and stage of development.
For babies! You don’t have to know how to walk or talk to enjoy a song. Your baby is ready to make some music!
Each family will receive a songbook, CD, access to the Music Zone! (covered in materials fee)

Musical Theater Jazz and Tap Dance (Miranda Heitz)

This upbeat dance class will teach young children Broadway-style choreography, show-stopping stage presence, creativity and improv, with a focus on learning jazz and tap numbers from a variety of musical productions, past and present!

Nerf Wars (Zachary Bloom)

Ages: 10-adult
Cost: $65 + $6 materials fee
Nerf Wars is a class that teaches students how to work together and learn the true definition of team work. Each class there will be an activity, for example: Team Death match, capture the flag, last man standing, and much more! Students will have to bring in their own Nerf guns, while i will bring to class the bullets. I will also bring in cut outs to resemble buildings or other structures, this will allow a unique environment for students to navigate and play, as well as working on their strategy skills. Students will also have to figure out who is best for certain tasks as their will be medics, leaders, regular soldiers, caravan carriers, and much more. This is a full contact sport, students are not allowed to touch one another however, Nerf bullets will be hitting a student possibly anywhere. This class can also be taken by parents! Goggles will be provided, but students are welcome to bring in a full face mask if they want.

Permaculture: Fun with Nature is an adventure helping kids to recognize natural patterns and connections to apply to all areas of life. Students learn hands-on and interactively, following and embodying the principles natural systems. This will allow them to create a future for which all generations can appreciate the benefits.
Focusing on the humble garden, we will spend 12 weeks touching on all aspects of natural systems, including animals, insects, birds, as well as survival skills and more. Each lesson is designed to be accessible for all learning styles and almost all ages.
This course connects Applied Sciences (Natural Science, Biology, Earth Science, Botany, etc.), with mathematics, creative thinking, and cognitive thinking.

A continuation of Permaculture 101: Fun with Nature, designed with those in mind who have already the intro course and want to explore further. (Six of these courses add up to the required 72 hours for a Permaculture Design Certificate, recognized worldwide as a professional design certification.)
Where the Fun with Nature course surveys the 12 principles of permaculture and focuses on science basics, this course takes everything just a bit further–we will spend more time building gadgets, creating functional systems and learning more in-depth about our natural environment and how we can be forces for positive change.
We will:

  • observe and recognize many native plants, insects and animals;
  • explore and experiment with design elements such as:
  • worm bins
  • water catchment
  • solar ovens
  • solar engines
  • mapping
  • learn how to increase diversity by creating habitats for
  • pollinators (bees, butterflies, etc.)
  • decomposers (worms, fungi)
  • other native species.

Each class will involve either individual or group projects and games to help gain insight into natural systems. A journal (provided) is required for documentation. This course may be taken in conjunction with the 101 class, for highly motivated students.

Each class begins with the children guessing what’s in the “Mystery Nature Box”. They are told to always begin with, “Is it alive?”. Sometimes it is – maybe a tarantula or a plant seed. Sometimes it is not – perhaps a fossil or crystal. Thus begins our scientific journey of the natural world.
Spring 2017 we will explore the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Inventions. Simple machines, crazy gadgets, static and current electricity, herpetology (the study of reptiles and amphibians), human vision, germs and antibodies and inventions are a sampling of the topics that will be introduced by “visits” of famous scientists and inventors: Archemedes, Isaac Newton, Louis Braille, Rube Goldberg, Ben Franklin and Louis Pasteur.
Each class will feature live animals: snakes, lizards, turtles, alligators, and other vertebrates and invertebrates.

Sculpey Clay Class (Martha Bunge)

Ages: 7-adult
Cost: $25 + $60 materials fee
Learn to use colorful polymer clay and create your own clay creations. This class will introduce the student to the basic clay techniques. Perfect clay for all craft projects including jewelry, figurines, animals and popular characters (minecraft, pokemon, shopkins). We will be using original oven-bake clay, it works and feels like ceramic clay but will not dry when exposed to air.
This class will have a weekly theme, however students can create whatever inspires them. Each project will require bake time that will be done after class by the teacher.
There will be some sharp tools used to cut clay and create designs.

Small Group Sewing (Stacy Tapscott)

Ages: 8-adult
Cost: $75 + $60 materials fee
Students will learn basic machine operation, basic sewing techniques, and necessary tools and terminology. Small class size for more individualized attention. Sewing machine will be provided to share but students may bring their own if they would like to learn on their own machine. All materials will be provided but personal materials can be brought also. The project we will be sewing are pillows, tote bags, pillow cases, skirts, headbands, aprons, etc.

Storytelling and Spoken Word (Miguel Pimentel)

Telling a good story is more than just listing a bunch of things that happened. It uses tone, rhythm and volume to make the difference between a boring speech and an awesome story. In this class, we explore what makes a good storyteller. We will recite stories, speeches and jokes that either we’ve written or someone else wrote. The focus is on using your voice to really captivate an audience and evoke a mood. Students will be asked to memorize or read from prepared pieces each session. Together, we will improve our “voice” and spin tales that people talk about for months.

Sweets and Treats Cooperative Class (Coordinator Jamie Fisher)

Ages: 6+

This is a class for kids who love to create sugary concoctions! If your child would like to join this class, you (the parent) will be responsible for planning, purchasing supplies and teaching a class. There will be a maximum of 12 children (and I expect it will be a full class). So with a 12 week semester that means each child’s parent will teach one time. If you have 3 children sign up for the class, you will teach 3 times!
So what can you do in your class? You can do a baking project, do cake or cupcake decorating, do cookie decorating, make candy, create crazy contraptions with candy, do science experiments with candy, and so much more! There will be a Pinterest board with lots of ideas. You can add to the board, choose an activity from there, or just choose your own. There will be a list for sign-ups for everyone in the class. That way, we will be sure not to duplicate class ideas.

Tabletop Game Design (Miguel Pimentel)

A game is a series of interesting choices. This is easy enough to understand. The question then becomes, when does the fun arrive? Is fun some kind of quality that we can simply sprinkle into a game and make it into a hit? This is not a computer based course. Tabletop games allow us to connect with each other in a way that videogames have yet to reach. In this course, students will design a card or board game from beginning to end. We will create a prototype, build on the prototype and then critique it. Along the way, we will learn the iterative development model, we will explore some real-world probability, draw some silly pictures and if we keep our fingers crossed, we’ll have something fun to play too. There will be the expectation of small things being done at home. All students will take home their game at the end of the semester!

Teen Fitness (Rob Mirlenbrink)

It is never too early to develop healthy exercise habits. These classes will teach respect, and team building skills and at the same time improve overall fitness. Areas covered will include strength and agility training, sports-specific sessions, cardiovascular and flexibility training. The programs are designed help the youth to adopt positive behaviors at an early age and help inspire them in their pursuit of lifelong fitness.
We will spend the first four classes learning about fitness; including how to use the fitness room machines. Students will be on their own to work out for the remaining 8 classes. Instructor will do a follow-up with students on (TBD) to see if they need more assistance or if they have any questions.

Teen Improv (Arp Laszlo)

This class is for teens & adults who are interested in not only being funny but improving the confidence and communication skills. We will focus on fun games and exercises to become better improvisers. We will learn to listen, communicate with our fellow players and support our teammates. We will create a safe, supportive space where we can play freely and without judgement. We will learn how to be funny without trying to be funny. We will work up from simple storytelling to multi-person scenes and skits, culminating in an end-of-semester performance if the students are up for it.
No prior experience is necessary.

Teen Interactive Board Games (Kim Polce)

Do you enjoy fun, strategic style games? If so, this class is for you! We will be playing group games such as Werewolf, Coup, Avalon and more. We will also have a class or two of “”speed gaming”” where we break-off into teams of 2-4 players and play a short 15-min game and then rotate to the next game.
A syllabus will be provided prior to our first class that will list the games we will be playing each week. Students are required to have a good understanding of each game before class. This will ensure that we have the entire time to play! Youtube is a great source for learning these games.
While this class will focus on fun, the student should be interested in and familiar with games with a strategic focus.

Terra: Role-playing and Problem solving (Miguel Pimentel)

Learn problem solving, teamwork and creative thinking while exploring Terra, a world full of adventure. A role playing game is a little like improv and a little like telling a story. The improv comes from the fact that you can have your character do almost anything and the story is woven from the efforts of the players and the Storyteller. We will use the Fate Core roleplaying system. Students will create their own characters and then use those characters to play in a shared world. They will use basic arithmetic along with lots of problem solving and teamwork to solve the ethical or tactical challenges ahead of them. Students are encouraged to write at home for in-game rewards. The idea is to learn in a play environment.

Chess: the Royal Game (Eric Clemenson)

Cost: $90
Chess is a great way to work the mind and is suitable for all ages. It is an open ended learning experience, there’s always room for improvement. Most importantly, it’s just plain FUN! Playing chess teaches patience, discipline, and responsibility for one’s decisions. It also brings increased confidence and integration of higher-order reasoning skills. Parents are encouraged to play their children (beating grown-ups is fun!). Beginners will be introduced to the history, rules and fundamentals of one of the world’s oldest strategic games. Meanwhile, experienced players will be introduced to tactical devices, checkmating patterns, elementary endgames and more. A portion of each class is set aside for play because, well, chess is a game and should be enjoyed as such.

Yarn Arts (Sara Norine James)

Join a circle of stitchers and get your fingers moving. Felting, Plying, Weaving, Macrame, Knitting, and Crochet will all be explored as we learn the fundamentals of textile creation. Students will design and create their own one-of-a-kind fiber pieces. This class emphasizes play, experimentation, and design while exposing students to traditional techniques. All levels welcome. Returning students are will be supported in their own projects.
Sara Norine James is a fiber artist and photographer from the Tampa Bay area. Her keen sense of intimacy in natural environments is the bases of her photographic work, while her instructional style manifests these comfortable surroundings. As a workshop leader, Sara’s instructional guidance is both liberating and comprehensively informative. As a life long learner, maker, and teacher, Sara uses her knowledge of traditional craft to create innovative art while maintaining functional design. Her ability to adapt and address the need of each student generates an engaging environment among many creatives. Sara’s encouraging nature along with her positive emphasis of common sense and play is appreciated by students who have chosen to join her.

Yoga and Mindfulness Training (Sherill Denison)

Youtube & Video Editing Course (Magic Jay)

Ages: 9-99

Requirement: Students must have a laptop & be able to read to navigate the Youtube website
This course the students will learn shoot cool videos, edit those videos & upload them to You-tube. We will use our computers to learn how to use video editing software and learn what types of videos generate more views. One of the most important lessons in this course will be how to get music for the videos, and own it too, so the video doesn’t get removed for copyright infringement.
Some people may want to get some fame and fortune, while others just want to express themselves with beautifully edited videos.
The Windows operating system is preferred but any system will work.
