This semester’s course will focus on songs and learning to harmonize and improvise. Additional finger exercises will continue to improve hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and speed. An emphasis on scales will turn the exercises into music in no time, even affording attendees the opportunity to solo. Ear-training will be practiced, and tablature will be a signature feature in learning songs. Handouts from each class with help you practice at home.

Kids Culinary Cooperative (Coordinator Kim Polce)

Ages: 8+
Cost: $5
Paypal email: apolce@verizon.net
This is a class for kids who are interested in exploring culinary fun. If your child would like to join this class, you (the parent) will be responsible for planning, purchasing supplies and teaching a class. There will be a maximum of 12 children (and I expect it will be a full class). So with a 12 week semester that means each child’s parent will teach one time. If you have 3 children sign up for the class, you will teach 3 times.
This is meant to be a fun way for kids to explore cooking, so be creative. Aim at providing instructions that a child 8+ will understand and may be able to re-create at home. Any type of cooking is acceptable – meal, appetizer, etc. The more hands-on for each child, the better.
Please be aware of basic safety precautions. If you need for parents to bring in extra items such as a cutting board, knives, etc., please give notice at least 5 days in advance (you will be provided with contact info before the semester begins).
There will be a sign-up sheet for each class with your cooking idea so that we do not duplicate any classes. The parent will be required to sign-up for their day(s) within the first two weeks of the semester. If you have not signed up by then, a day will be selected for you.
If your child has an allergy, please notify me ASAP after registering so that I can let parents know. If you have been alerted about an allergy in the class, please refrain from bringing in any of those items during your class.

Science & Nature (Doug Scull)

Ages: 4-7, 7+
Cost: $95; $10 sibling discount
Each class begins with the children guessing what’s in the “Mystery Nature Box”. They are told to always begin with, “Is it alive?”. Sometimes it is – maybe a tarantula or a plant seed. Sometimes it is not – perhaps a fossil or crystal. Thus begins our scientific journey of the natural world.
Topics include:

  • Plants- growing bean seeds, making chlorophyll painting & leaf prints.
  • Meet the plant-eating African Pancake Tortoise and Green Iguana.
  • No-Bones (aka invertebrates) – worms and compost, Medicinal Leeches (we will not have any “blood-letting”); native millipedes and giant Vietnamese Centipedes; Trap-door spiders and its Arachnid relatives – the tarantula, giant scorpion and African Vinergaroon; and last, but certainly not least- the insects, including antlions, grubs, Bess Beetles, and giant Hissing Roaches.
  • For vertebrate comparisons, the children will meet a 14 foot-long Burmese Python, American Alligator, African Hedgehogs and many more “boney” critters.
  • October is “Creature of the Night” month. I will introduce the children to bats and owls.

Note: the 2nd period class was added after the Meet & Greet. If you have a schedule conflict, you can choose either class for your child, regardless of age.

Storytelling and crafts (Karine Lespinasse)

Children who likes to tell stories can learn how to perform kamishibai storytelling, create their own ending, experiment performing techniques.

Sweets and Treats Cooperative Class (Coordinator Jamie Fisher)

Ages: 6+
Cost: $5
This is a class for kids who love to create sugary concoctions! If your child would like to join this class, you (the parent) will be responsible for planning, purchasing supplies and teaching a class. There will be a maximum of 12 children (and I expect it will be a full class). So with a 12 week semester that means each child’s parent will teach one time. If you have 3 children sign up for the class, you will teach 3 times!
So what can you do in your class? You can do a baking project, do cake or cupcake decorating, do cookie decorating, make candy, create crazy contraptions with candy, do science experiments with candy, and so much more! There will be a Pinterest board with lots of ideas. You can add to the board, choose an activity from there, or just choose your own. There will be a list for sign-ups for everyone in the class. That way, we will be sure not to duplicate class ideas.

Teen Improv & Comedy Workshop (Arp Laszlo)

Ages: 13+
Cost: $96; 10% sibling discount
Required: Facebook account for membership in a private Facebook group
Paypal email: arphaus@gmail.com
This class is for teens & adults who are interested in not only being funny but learning why we laugh. Is it because we’re being silly? Or is it something else? Many of our great comedy writers and performers in the past 40+ years have come from an improv background. We will be exploring the link between improvisation and great comedy.
The class will have two parts: in class exercises & activities, along with homework a couple of times a week.
In class, we will focus on fun games and exercises to become better improvisers. We will learn to listen, communicate with our fellow players and support our teammates. We will create a safe, supportive space where we can play freely and without judgement. We will learn how to be funny without trying to be funny. We will work up from simple storytelling to multi-person scenes and skits, culminating in an end-of-semester performance.
Outside of class we will share and discuss comedy videos in a private Facebook group regularly during the week. Homework will also involve improv-oriented exercises (exercises to practice: things to observe). The videos we watch in our private group will range from short stand up performances and comedy sketches to informational videos that will help us become better performers and creators
No prior experience is necessary.
Note: Due to the nature of comedy, where all aspects of humanity are laid bare, the videos we discuss may involve language and topics that are mature, controversial or sensitive in nature (this includes subsequent videos beyond those we discuss if students take it upon themselves to delve deeper). Care will be taken to make sure all class members feel safe and respected at all times. If you’d like to discuss this before registration, please message me on Facebook. Parents are welcome to join the private Facebook group and watch the videos with their kids.

Chess: the Royal Game (Eric Clemenson)

Ages: 6-16

Chess is a great way to work the mind and is suitable for all ages. It is an open ended learning experience, there’s always room for improvement. Most importantly, it’s just plain FUN! Playing chess teaches patience, discipline, and responsibility for one’s decisions. It also brings increased confidence and integration of higher-order reasoning skills. Parents are encouraged to play their children (beating grown-ups is fun!). Beginners will be introduced to the history, rules and fundamentals of one of the world’s oldest strategic games. Meanwhile, experienced players will be introduced to tactical devices, checkmating patterns, elementary endgames and more. A portion of each class is set aside for play because, well, chess is a game and should be enjoyed as such.
