COOL KIDS BOOK CLUB (Lisa Casey)

Email: lisacasey3333@gmail.com

I love talking about books with students– and I especially love urging you to dig deep and think about books beyond a simple “I liked it” or “I didn’t like it”. This is a cool class where I encourage readers to discover great books, share new stories, explore interesting topics, and have some “bookish” fun!

We will utilize modern books that are entertaining, engaging, and discussion worthy. We will use a variety of creative ways to read and respond to the books. We will also touch on literary devices like character, setting, context clues, plot development and more. This will help students see that reading “smart” and spotting literary devices can feel like cracking a secret code which helps them love and understand books on a deeper level. 🙂

For the first couple of weeks, I will read to the class, and then we will vote on a couple of books from the list below. We will use these books to learn about literary devices, and then your child can apply the same knowledge to any level book they are reading at home.

Note: There will be some additional reading and/or work at home (not every week). This is always optional, but will be helpful for class continuity.

A unique and fun history class, designed to cover some of the biggest moments in European History. My background includes studying, working and living in Europe where I pursued a degree in Political Science and a minor in History. In this class, we will cover interesting topics and discuss little known facts to connect students to these moments in time.

What led to these events? What was their impact? What can be learned from these moments?

Bubonic Plague – Did doctors have patients drink their own urine as a potential cure?

French Revolution – What was the “national razor?”

Napoleon – How short was Napoleon and was he afraid of cats?

World War I – How old was the youngest combatant? Why did women turn yellow in the war?

World War II – How many sheets of toilet paper were soldiers given per day? How many US cars were made before the war versus how many were made during the war?

The Cold War – What role did shoelaces play in The Cold War?

FRENCH 1 (Jessica Oker)

Ages: 9+

Fee: $85 plus $15 non-refundable materials fee

Email: jessicaoker@gmail.com

At the age of 14, I became an exchange student. I traveled to France and enrolled in 9th grade knowing only two words that I learned on the plane. Maison and Chat – House and Cat. Within 4 months, I had to show my passport to prove that I was an American and not French. Immersion, combined with youth make for a potent combination when studying language. In my opinion, wrote instruction is limited and individuals need to learn a second language as they learn their first – through conversation and experiences.

This class is designed to be an ongoing conversational French class that enables any level learner to participate. Each semester, we will expand our vocabulary and pronunciation. We will explore French culture, history, pop culture, art and snacks. The class will be taught mostly in French with English translation. It will be conversational and interactive. Grammar will be experienced and not taught. Students are encouraged to jump into the curriculum at any time!

This class gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of games that children are playing around the globe. It will be a combination of geography, history, learning the rules of the games, and ultimately having fun playing them. There will also be time for other matches such as checkers, chess, and fun board games on special days of the semester, so students can bring in their favorites and teach others how to play.

For readers of Percy Jackson (though not a requirement for the class). If you enjoy the mythologies of the Greeks and Romans we will have fun.

* Introduction to Greek Mythology for Kids: A Fun Collection of the Best Heroes, Monsters, and Gods in Greek Myth (Greek Myths) by Richard Marcus (Author), Natalie Buczynsky (Author)

* D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths by Ingri d’Aulaire and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire

I will bring projects of some kind related to the story or area of power we are discussing.

I will also encourage one or more of the learners each week to share what they know and what they remember from Percy Jackson if they have read these books.

As a big reader and with the name Andromeda I have read a lot about mythology over the years. When my kids recently read all the Percy Jackson books I got into the subject with them again and found how much I loved it all over again. I hope to have an enjoyable time with the learners.

HOW TO ARGUE (AND DEBATE) (Andromeda Edison)

Debates are a great way to gain knowledge, develop critical thinking, and improve communication skills, among other things. We will learn how to behave during a formal debate, but also a real life discussion with another person when you have different views than the other person.

Be aware, we do talk about serious subjects in this class and if this would make your learner uncomfortable please do not sign them up for the class.

Occasionally, we will do in class fun spontaneous debates. We will pick a question at random and then each learner will pick a side at random, prepare their arguments in 5-10 minutes and then present their arguments in 5-10 minutes.

Sample silly questions:

* Which shape is more beautiful, the triangle or the square?

* Would you rather see a sunset or a sunrise?

* Which color is the best?

Sample serious questions:

* What rules should be in place for abortion?

* Should there be more restrictions on the use of guns?

* Is Global Warming a real problem?

* Should more recreational drugs be made legal?

* Other current event type questions…

The classes are learner lead and I do let them decide what questions and type of discussions we will be doing. There will be occasional games with prizes for the learners as well.

I have 13+ years experience educating on two very similar documents, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written by the United Nations in 1948 and the United States Constitution. I received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2018 in Washington D.C. for my work in these areas. I work with middle and high school students to discuss every day issues and the more serious subjects as well.

I will be traveling the end of March so if I am unable to get the class covered by another teacher when gone I will refund for the class missed.

Note: If there is a subject you feel strongly about us avoiding please let me know.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS FLAT STANLEY? (Lisa Casey)

Ages: 6-11

Fee:  $85 plus $30 non-refundable materials fee

Email: lisacasey3333@gmail.com

This super fun class will incorporate, reading, writing, math, science, geography, and creativity. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished “as flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on him. The story goes on to tell how Stanley discovers some real advantages to being flat—ESPECIALLY SINCE HE CAN FIT INTO AN ENVELOPE AND BE MAILED ANY PLACE IN THE WORLD.

We will read the book in class over a period of a few weeks, then make plans to send out our FLAT STANLEYS to locations all over the World. We will track travels on a map and learn about the geography of the location Flat Stanley travels to. The person who gets a FLAT STANLEY “decorates” him in clothes he might wear to reflect the climate and / or activities FLAT STANLEY might see or do there. We will also send out a questionnaire so that we can find out what FLAT STANLEY saw or did in that faraway city, what the climate is like, the distance between that city and ours, and some interesting facts about that city. Then that lucky person sends those facts back to us with the newly dressed FLAT STANLEY!

Note: This class will have some homework, (especially if your child needs help writing), and it will be a part of what we are learning in class. You will need to purchase the Flat Stanley book, but I will send you a link once you sign up for the class. We will also be making a lap journal to incorporate what we have will be learning about. Hope you will come and enjoy the JOURNEYS OF FLAT STANLEY with me!
