Learn Outside the Book: Fun with Middle School Math (Alethia Clark)
Ages: 10-16
Cost: $100

Explore and create with math in a fun way. Solve problems designed by NASA to understand the solar system. Use physical materials and technology to create models of real-life problems. Instead of just memorizing how to do math, you can learn what math actually is in the real world!

Note to Parents: Most math classes focus on procedure only (how to do math). Math educators are beginning to incorporate application (how to use math in real-life). I blend procedure and application with concept (what math actually is). When students understand what math actually is, then they can go beyond the applications they are shown by teachers. They can invent new ways to apply the math in real-life. As technology exponentially changes our world, the next generation will be using math in ways we can’t even imagine.

If your child wants to expand on the lessons we will do in class, they can join the Khan Academy classroom I will setup online. Its free to join, and fun to use. Students can watch concept and procedure videos and answer problems with instant feedback. (Class participation and completion of Khan Academy assignments would be equivalent to the first half of 6th grade mathematics.) Topics covered: ratios, dividing fractions, factors, multiples, negative numbers, number line movement, intro to Algebra. To maximize learning potential in this class, students should already be proficient in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers.
